Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society annual meeting is disrupted by anti-abolitionists.

January 24, 1861

The meeting is held at Tremont Temple. Speakers include James Freeman Clarke and Ralph Waldo Emerson. After the mob interrupts the program, Wendell Phillips declares, “We will have free speech yet. Massachusetts is not conquered; the Capitol is not owned by State Street and whoever is Mayor of Boston, John Andrew is Governor of the Commonwealth.” The rioters subsequently march on Phillips’ house on Essex (Exeter) Street.
